“Rowanhood” is a short film by Magic Owl Media, whom Ashlanders may remember for their bird-friendly rom-com parody, “The Better Half,” which made its rounds through pretty much all of the local film fests last year.

The story is a surrealist comedy retelling of “Little Red Riding Hood,” set in modern-day, with the addition of some wacky side characters and a pack of scary gangsters working for the Big Bad Wolf. I don’t want to say too much else lest I spoil it for you.

I play Val, the lead character’s pretty, popular sister. The director, Imogen Straub, told me she had me in mind for Val because she could really see me playing the most popular girl in high school who has lots of male admirers. This was very flattering, but anyone who actually knew me in high school might be laughing their behinds off right now.

Like that.

Like that.

Anyway, it’s a very creative and fun short and I’m glad I got to be a part of it! There is some violence, strong language, and adult content, so make sure you don’t watch it without headphones near a playground.

Excited for these guys to keep putting their unique and distinctive owly spin on things! They have since relocated to Seattle. You can check out more of their work here.

And here’s “Rowanhood!”

A surrealist fractured fairy tale starring Josephine Czarnecki, Rob Pelfrey, and Mig Windows.
